Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California, San Diego offers an exceptional research program for graduate students in the fields of Climate and Atmospheric Sciences, Geosciences, and Ocean Biosciences. Currently, the earth and marine sciences are lagging behind other STEM fields in terms of ethnic and gender diversity at all levels of academia. As a leader in oceanographic research, we recognize our responsibility in supporting programs that diversify the academy through training a more inclusive and diverse future generation of scientists. Diversity strengthens all communities, including higher education; it incites creative solutions by involving individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, and it promotes an environment where people are judged by their contributions and the quality of their character.

In an effort to encourage and support qualified students from underrepresented backgrounds in STEM to apply to Scripps, we are offering the following programs and information:

  1. Graduate Application Assistance Programs (GAAP) – Chat with Scripps Scientist and SIO-ASK (see below and attached flyer)
  2. Diversity-focused Fellowships for Incoming Students (see below)
  3. Summer Research Opportunities at Scripps (see attached flyer)

SIO-ASK (Applicant Support and Knowledgebase) is a mentorship program for prospective Scripps graduate students that matches applicants with current graduate student mentors and provides personalized mentorship throughout the application process.

Students may fill this application in order to RSVP for the workshop series and to apply for the student mentorship program and/or 1:1 video chats with scientists.   Students from all backgrounds are eligible, but we particularly encourage applications from underrepresented students.

We ask for your assistance in distributing this invitation and the attached flyer among the underrepresented minority students within all STEM-related departments of your institution. Together we hope to build a more diverse future generation of scientists both at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and within the earth and marine science fields at large.

Competitive Edge
The Competitive EDGE Summer Research Program is an eight-week summer transition program designed to give selected graduate students an opportunity to begin research in their UC San Diego academic department the summer prior to the start of their graduate program. Participants are required to attend workshops, which acclimate them to the university. In addition, these workshops provide an opportunity for participants to network with one another and build relationships. Workshop facilitators are members of the UC San Diego community and serve as faculty, staff or continuing graduate students in various academic fields.
